I am learning a lot about the setup of my guitar from references on the internet with conjecture on which way the saddle should face. I have looked at pictures and shows it facing both ways. I have seen saddles with bigger notches for the E A D strings but the notches on mine all look identical. My question is does it matter? it looks easier to set intonation with it facing the tailpiece.

Ideally, saddles should have the slope towards the tailpiece. Some bridges are less than perfectly placed. If you flip the saddle, you can get a bit extra room for proper intonation. As far as the grooves in the saddles, if the strings stat in place when you play and there are no sharp edges that break strings, you are good to go.

Sometimes you see saddles flipped to get a little extra travel in order to dial in intonation.
