I got some work done today.
I've been looking at this guitar for awhile now, and black hardware is definitely the way I want to go.

I still haven't found a neck for it, but decided to put the crate/electra neck on it for now. I just put my extra Squire neck on the crate guitar.

Along with the bad paint, someone knocked the webbing between the neck pocket and the neck pickup out. I don't want to mess with matching paint, so I added a chunk of walnut that I had. The neck I used is rounded at the end, but if I change the fingerboard out for one that has a fret or two more, I think I can just hide the repair under the longer finger board. Just have to make sure the scale doesn't change.

I did find one Matsumoku pickup that was coil tapable, but while looking I found the four wire Jackson pickups you can see in the picture. Since this will never really be original again, and it's hardly a collectable specimen, I'm thinking about just wiring the Jackson pups in to sed how they sound. I really like the way they look (after removing the Jackson logo).

Yeah, I'd like that neck, but not for $95.
I don't have that much in the whole guitar.

I think I'm too cheap to put these things together.

These are the type to fit it. They do come up a lot cheaper. Make him an offer, worst he can say is no.

The early Crate/Electra necks are actually the same headstock. The fret board is rounded after the 21st fret. The Westone necks had at least 22 frets. A couple more frets would cover that patch, but it would be cheaper to change my finger board to a longer one. I did think about making an offer on that Westone neck though. It's been listed for quite a while. I wouldn't want to insult him though.

I suggest that you go ahead and make an offer, don't worry about insulting him. He's asking for offers, and so shouldn't be insulted when someone makes one. As long as you communicate with respect when (if) any dialog occurs, he shouldn't have a problem with it. Always offer a bit under what you really are willing to pay-- I think people expect to negotiate at least a little. Probably wouldn't hurt to give him a very short back story on your restoration project, and the kind of $ you're dealing with. He may be inclined to help you out.

Well, it's mostly together. One of my new push pulls is broken (the shaft just comes all the way out) and only the bridge pickup is working as of right now. I need to recheck my wiring to figure that one out.
But, that's what it is going to look like.

I'm kind of bummed that I didn't get it completely working today. I might not get back to it for a bit now.
I got real work to do.

How is the intonation with that un-original neck? Night and day results from your 'before' pictures, congrats.

I haven't set the intonation yet. Part of the reason the new wood is so big is because I had to move the neck pocket a bit so that the intonation would work out.

According to meadurement it should work out. I can always cut the pocket back again if I need to, but itshould adjust out just fine.

I was thinking about my wiring issue and I think I might be missing a ground on the first push pull. I purpisely left a long ground lead to solder to the housing, but I remember trimming it off when assembling. This is why working in a hury is never good. I'll now have to take the pots back out and check for that ground.

The bridge pickup sounds awesome though. I hope I get time to work on it again next week.
I can't fix that broken push pull, but I should be able to get everything else working.

All working now.
I probably should have thinned the neck a bit where it fits in the picket. I'm at the top of the saddle adjustments. It isn't topped out completely, but just a bit less neck in the pocket would have been better.

I still dont have the coil split push pull pot fixed. I can't get one locally, so I need to order one. Might be awhile before I place an order, but i'm sure wiring in the new pot will get it all done.

It's a pretty neat guitar. My wife hates it though. She says it's the ugliest guitar in my collection.

Excellent job, and it does look good with the black hardware. I hope you find a correct style neck for it, they pop up every now and then as the guys state and are good necks. Man, I bet that guitar would sound good with a duncan JB trembucker and a Jazz neck model.

Some of the pointy electras are SO UGLY they are downright purdy! I didn't like the pointy models back then because they were different. Now I like the pointy models because they ARE different. Go figure.
