I need to replace the humbucker bridge pickup on my 72 Longnecker bass. Any suggestions as to what will fit and where to buy it?

you almost need to find a direct replacement, or go with a different one and make a new ring for it...

I've done both ways, but those pickups did have issue with the windings coming loose, so normally if they were removed, they were chucked into the garbage. I've also fixed the winding problem, but it's not for the faint of heart.

best bet is to take measurements and keep scouring eBay for one that matches....

You could look into having it re-wound. BTW please post only oneplace per post. This may do best in the parts wanted section.

one more thing I forgot. it's actually just a single coil pup under the cover, so you may be able to fit a similar pup into that case...

Check the pup to determine if it is really bad. If you have a volt/amp/ohm meter (analog is best but digital works also), use a 1/4" mono phone plug with no cable attached and insert it into the output jack. Connect the leads of the meter to the tip and ring solder posts of the plug. Set the meter to AC voltage. Turn the bridge pot to full and hit the strings one at a time. If the pup is working, you will register a reading in the 200 to 350 millivolt range. Adjusting the pup closer to the string increases the voltage and hence the output. If there is no voltage reading or very low, check that the small screws (for the old MAXCN, [not MAXON] soap bar pups) under each string are not screwed down to the bottom. Raise them a half turn up. If still no output, remove the tone/volume control plate and unsolder the white and shield from the pot. Use a meter to measure the resistance of the coil. For the neck, the reading should be 8.5K Ohms (8500 ohms) and for the bridge, the coil should read 8.7K Ohms. If the coil is open (broken wire) you will get "OL" on a digital meter and "zero" on an analog meter.

These old pups are almost indestructible. They can be disassembled easily and rewound. My 2271 is 43 years old and the pups are original and still work better than any other I have used.
