Buddy has a really nice X270 (or possibly an X250, if you read the documentation I am not sure of the difference). His has 3 mini toggles, 2 silver and one black, and his has the boost circuit that takes a battery). I told him I thought it was a 270. But I am not totally convinced on this because the catalog is less than clear to me. Some of you guys currently own both and can look at them and tell me. I have had

It IS a matsumoku guitar, it has the signs, I am pretty sure it has MMK pickups in it, it has slightly different stock keys (like the ones on my dickey betts model. It has the metal covers on back, and definitely has the booster. This I have a high degree of certainty.

The other question is about the serial number vs. the model year vs. when Rene Lopez inspected it prior to shipping. The stamped serial number is 012128 so I was thinking it was a 1980 model. But Rene Lopez inspected it 12-82. So that would be a 1982 year, actually the end of that year. So did this sit around for a couple years before getting inspected and shipped or was I incorrect in reading the serial number? Or?

What is the brain trust's opinion?

:D

how do I distinguish an X250 from an X270? What are the differences?

It is hard to tell from the catalog.

The pages for them is confusing. A note says the x250 has 4 knobs and the x270 3 knobs.
The photos at both pages show tree switches on both models.
But the price list shows one with 2 switches and 4 knobs. It's not clear which model the image is of.
The description of the x270 at the top of the page says it has Magnaflux pickups, but the x250 page doesn't say which humbuckers.

I just re-watched ProEndorser's video of the powered EQ models.
He says 4 knobs is x250, 3 knobs x270.
He also mentioned that the 270 body is a sandwich, with maple in the center (seen at the belly cut in the video). But the x270 page photo don't show a maple center at the belly cut. go figure
The price list says the x250 has an ash body.

The above video shows all six variants of the X200 (non Omega) guitars. The X250 has four knobs in a row, the X270 has three. That's the quickest way to distinguish the two. The X250 had separate Treble and Bass knobs and the X270 had a brass bridge. These models didn't come out until 1980, so as far as I know, they all had MMK pickups, some MMK45's and some MMK53's. "Magna flux" and "Super Magnaflux" are just marketing terms, so I don't pay much attention to sales talk.

012 at the beginning of a serial number would indicate December of 1980 manufacture, and I guess it's conceivable that it sat in a case for a while before being set up and sold, but who knows?

I find my X250 is about 2 lbs lighter than the X270 I had (sold off...), and I thought the extra bass and treble knobs made it more versatile, so I thought the X250 was the better of the two, your mileage may vary. I hope this helps, Mike.
