My first real guitar was a Westone Spectrum GT bass, in candy red. I was 16 years old, all about heavy metal and girls. The curves and color of that bass had me enthralled. That body shape and color has never left me. I'd always wanted a super clean example of a candy red Spectrum, or Phoenix.

Hard to find a nice one. I tried to buy one about a month ago, but the seller failed to follow through. I was bummed.

About a week ago, however, I stumbled upon another one. Looked even better than the one that got away! The seller had bought the guitar new in 1984, and was now retired looking to fund a 12 string. He said he'd never played the thing. Well, from the looks of it, he was right!

Here it is... 1984 X199CR with case. Essentially "new" from top to tail, no playwear whatsoever. There are tiny flecks of paint missing from tuner keys and the saddles, this from the cheap metal used under the paint, caused not from use but from time. There is also a tiny birthmark (a finish imperfection) from the factory. But zero wear.

METAL knobs and cavity plates! That's my favorite part about it, lol. Just something about these switchmaster knobs in metal. It came with the whammy bar, too. Including case keys in the pouch.

Anyhow, if you want to see how an X199 would have looked new back in 1984, here you go!

As I said over at Westone, I'd be a little wary even holding that, far less playing it!

Interesting that it's got the metal Switchmaster knobs, borrowed from Westone, but Electra didn't put on a flash bridge; that's the Bendmaster Precision which is only the fine tuners away from the Bendmaster FT?!

I wonder what year the heel-less neck join became available?
