We'd all like to see more catalogs, i know. I'd especially like to see what model colors were available circa 1973. (still trying to ID my gold Electra Phoenix)

If someone has one and is willing to scan, I'd like copies and I know AP would love them for the guitar gallery.

thanks,
paul

ok, the date is easy, per the serial number it's an '83. It's jsut that it's metallic gold, and I didn't think that was a color available on any of the Phoenix models i've seen. It's got H-S-H pickups like an X189, and the round-cornered cover on the single like some of the earlier 83's. The bridge has been replaced with a Floyd Rose, are there any other details that would help?

I'd be happy to take pics, and I mean to do that with all of them anyway, but otherwise it seems identical to my other X189's. Maybe gold was just an available color and I didn't know it.

thanks,
Paul

My next door neighbor works at SLM. Let me see what I can do from the inside. Maybe there are other Electra fans still working there that might have inside info. I may have a couple of other avenues. I'll do what (if anything) I can.

These are the easiest Electra's to date, the phoenix models were only made 1981-84. If my memory serves me, hopefully my Electra page backs me up, 1981/82 said "Electra" on the headstock, 1983 said "Electra-Phoenix" on the headstock & 1984 said "Electra-Westone" on the headstock. To further simplify things, there's usually an anniversary placque on 1982 models. The X160 is not in my 1982 catalog but it is in my 1984 (as the X160BR). Therefore, it must be assumed that the X160 was introduced in 1983 and ended in 1984 when Electra ceased to be. Hope this helps. Send me a photo if you like.

btw, I can't copy my catalogs because they are already fairly poor quality copies :-)

This is why I love this site. I now know my electra is an 83. I bought one on ebay that said westone (exactly the same guitar) I guess its an 84, so I also went and bought the one with Phoenix on the headstock. Its a minor detail, but it was going to bug me that it wasn't the exact year and model. I'll have 2 of these for a while till I can find it in my heart to sell the westone headstock model. But I have a hard time selling guitars.

Thanks, Ronnie

I found that although they appear nearly identical, the Electra Westone versions seem to have a bit less soul to them, whereas the Electra-Phoenixes seem to be more like 'made on a good day' guitars. So I guess I like the 83's better, and the earlier, the better. The gold instrument is seriial niumber 308xxxx (forget exactly) which makes it my earliest E-P, and it is quite the monster, action and tone-wise.

I think it's because Uncle Matt made guitars in small batches, and so some guitars that seem identical in hardware, like the various Spectrum series, can vary hugely depending (I'm guessing) on the TLC that went into finishing and adjustments.
